Shima Dojo – 09/23/2008
We started class with a series of stretches that were all pretty standard. After that we went into a few basic moves. I may have the order mixed up here.
First was a series of てほどき (tehodoki), or wrist holding escapes. All started from しぜんのかまえ (shizen no kamae). From a same side grab we turned to the opposite side being attack while rotating the palm down pulling the wrist free. The kamae you stepped into could be ひらのかまえ (hira no kamae) or いちもんじのかまえ (ichimonji no kamae) as long as you kept your elbows in and sunk your body weight. If you can remember to to flex your hand before doing the move it will aid in the release. The next one was from a cross grab and you did basically the same thing. This time you rotated your palm up. You would turn in the same direction as previously done if your partner grabbed with the same hand. The last one was from a two handed grab. This time use your free hand to grab your own hand and pull it up as you step back into いちもんじのかまえ (ichimonji no kamae). We practiced stepping back with either leg.
Next was おもてぎゃく (omote gyaku). From しぜんのかまえ (shizen no kamae) when the opponent reaches out cover and step back slightly. For this, good timing is better than poor timing. Good timing means moving so that your opponent can just barely grasp your lapel. We worked on just this part first. After a few minutes of that we added the next step which is stepping off at an angle and applying the lock.
Next was おもてぎゃくつき (omote gyaku tsuki) and it was the same as before except you add the じょだんうけながし (jodan uke nagashi).
Next we did ひだりかたうでとんそうがた (hidari kata ude tonsou gata) of the さんとうとんこうのがた (santou tonkou no gata) from Togakure Ryu.
Next we worked ほんぎゃく (hongyaku) from a same side grab and pull. The attack is the same as the last step of the previous kata only this time we’re doing a wrist lock. The movement is pretty much the same as in the kata. When the pull occurs step out to the side with the movement and apply the lock. After that we did it with the opponent throwing a punch to the stomach. The movment here is the same. Actually, I can’t remember if we did two different versions here. We may have just done the version with the punch. Anyway, punch or no punch, get off the line of attack and apply the lock.
Finally, we ended class with bo etiquette and kamae. The etiquette is as follows:
- Meet a little more than bo length apart.
- Lay the bo down as you kneel into seiza no kamae.
- Bow.
- Step forward with the right foot (keeping the left knee down) as you pick up the bow and stand it up.
- Lay the bo down again so that the end meets with your opponent’s hand.
- Stand as you drop back into ichimonji no kamae.
Next was moving into each of the following kamae.
- Jodan no kamae
- Chuudan no kamae
- Gedan no kamae
- Ichimonji no kamae
- Hiraichimonji no kamae
- Ihen no kamae
- Seigan no kamae
- Tenchi no kamae
- Heitou no kamae
The bo stuff can be seen in the Rokushaku Bojutsu video.
